Russell Boardman [1898 1933] was an American aviation pioneer, race pilot and stunt pilot who died on July 1, 1933 as a result of injuries sustained when his Gee Bee Model R crashed during the Bendix Trophy race. John Polando [1901 1985] was an early aviation pioneer and World War II pilot who died in 1985 from injuries he received in a crash. On July 28, 1931, Boardman and Polando took off from Floyd Bennett Field in New York and flew the distance of 5,011 miles non-stop and landed in Istanbul, Turkey setting a world distance record.
