The fountain pen shown in the 12 photographs and rotating video is the exact pen you will receive. Because every piece of Spalted Tamarind is different, the photographs and video are an important part of the description. They show the actual grain, coloration and spalting around the pen being offered. THE STORY OF SPALTED TAMARIND. The remarkable pattern in this fountain pen began in nature. Tamarind (Tamarindus indica) normally has pale, creamy-colored sapwood. Under the right natural conditions, fungi interact with the wood and create dark lines, contrasting areas and irregular patterns collectively known as spalting. The distinctive lines aren’t painted, printed or artificially added while making the pen. They developed naturally within the wood. Too little spalting produces little figure. If decay progresses too far, the wood eventually becomes too soft and deteriorated for fine woodworking. Desirable spalted material exists between these extremes? After nature has created dramatic patterns but while the wood can still be preserved and worked. This Tamarind was also stabilized. During stabilization, resin penetrates the porous wood and reinforces it, helping turn this highly figured natural material into a more consistent blank suitable for precision turning, sanding and polishing. The result combines two processes. Nature creates the pattern. Stabilization helps preserve it. The craftsman reveals it. Because spalting develops unpredictably, no two pieces of Spalted Tamarind will have exactly the same lines and figure. THE BEAUFORT MISTRAL FOUNTAIN PEN.
