The Schnell’s Penselpen was the brainchild of Julius Schnell, a master small-time pen maker in New York City. This pen, with the infamous airplane clip on the cap, was made for only one year (1929) to commemorate Lindbergh’s flight across the Atlantic. The company then fell victim to the Great Depression and shuttered its doors. The original push level filling mechanism is intact, and there is lead in the pencil. I have never written with it, but it appears to be in amazing shape for a nearly 100 year old pen. The name of the original owner – Robert Hauswald – is etched on the body. The proprietary imprint of Schnell’s Penselpen with the patent numbers is still visible on the body as well. I have never seen a Penselpen in this particular type of celluloid, which is quite chatoyant. Combine that with the Lindbergh clip and the original push lever filling device and you have one really rare pen.

A (figurative) steal at a pen show this year, this pen is identical to one I use on a daily basis, but is in brand new condition. There may be a few hairline scratches on this notoriously-durable UR resin from Pineider (please inspect the photos carefully), but I struggled to find any. In using my identical pen, I found the nib needed just a little’wearing in’ on a couple of rough pages. After that, it writes like a dream with a medium ink flow. A Pineider converter is included they even released a “blacked out” version for their matte black accented models, which I thought was funny. However, like most of its siblings, this pen can also take a standard cartridge. Note the extra’easter egg’ that is the Florence, Italy skyline along the waist of the pen. It’s the city where Pineider is based and manufactures the Avatar. The Avatar UR fountain pen is a magnificent tribute to the world of Avatar. The cap ring is a tribute to the Florence skyline, and the clip evokes a goose feather. This is an unrestored Vintage Schnell’s Penselpen, in need of a lever repair and replacement of a sac. Nice green/black marble that would make a great project. Original Scnhell’s firm nib 14k nib. Lever assembly moves around freely and will definitely need replacement or work. Appears to be missing ringtop. Schnell’s are highly collectible as can be seen per some quick internet research.
For your consideration is a very rare Todd’s Duplex Fountain Pen Pencil Combo in Mottled Green Jade. This pen is in original condition and shows no cracks or breaks in the cap or barrel. The pen is a lever filler and the lever filler is complete, but the ink sac or bladder will need to be replaced. The color of the barrel and cap has some staining from ink as can be seen in the pictures. The pocket clip is very strong and solid, with some minor wear on the ball to the gold fill plating. The pencil mechanism seems to turn and work but I do not have any lead to test it. The nib is stamped, Edward Todd & Co. The barrel of the pen is marked, ” “Todd’s Duplex Edward Todd & Co.
