Pelikan 101N Tortoise Celluloid & RHR Fountain Pen 1940. 14K F FULL Flex Nib. Pen has zero Cracks, Splits or Repairs etc. Ultra rare to find so clean. Made in Germany from 1940 in this exact form. This wonderful example is as Handsome a Tortoise 101N as you will EVER see. Sublime colour and pattern variation. Every 101N is unique in its colour and pattern and so some are better than others. This example is Very handsome indeed. The Fluted Clip and Ring Band are Yellow Gold plated and superb with no plate loss or brassing. The see-through Green inner Barrel/Window is super clean and bright. The Caps Top Section, Piston housing and Blind Cap (Tail End) are made of RHR (Red Hard Rubber). The entire pen has no cracks. Overall once in the hand to the naked eye this 82 year old looks amazing. Ultra rare to find so clean and still fully working with no cracks. Of course the real crowning glory to this pen has to be that wonderful 14K F Full Flex nib which is in MINT condition with zero damage. Perfect original Iridium tips are good to last several more lifetimes. Nib writes with a Fine line that has Extra Fine line side stroke at normal pressure. Very elegant writer perfect for everyday use. However, this nib really comes alive the moment you exercise its flexibility. It offers its user ALL line width variations from EF to BB on the down stroke when varying levels of pressure is applied. The flex is quite user friendly in that it is not too soft, loose or twitchy. Only flexes upon user command never by itself. Very creative nib full of personality and spring. A nib so creative its only limitation is the imagination and writing ability of its user. The Pelikan 101N is a fabulous and practical compact size when capped at 12.2cm or 4.9 inches. However to think of these pens as small is to not understand their design. Once the pen is posted Cap on Tail end ready to write they are actually longer than a 1930-40s Montblanc 136 or a 1950s 146 etc (see photo 3). The Pelikan 101N offers the best of both. Short enough to fit in your chest pocket or inner Jacket pocket without sticking up looking foolish like MOST modern pens do. Yet when posted (cap on tail) ready to write they are as long or longer than most so called large long pens of their ERA. 101N also have superb Width. Similar to 136, 146. The Nib is also large at size 4. In my opinion the Pelikan 100, 101, 100N and 101N are the cleverest and most important original designed pen EVER made in Germany. Certainly the most influential pen in German history. Pelikan 101N Tortoise (faux Tortoise made of Celluloid) Fountain Pen 1950s LAST Issue. Works as when new. Pen has zero cracks, splits or repairs etc. Made in Germany early 1950s. This example of the 101N was the final made. These 101N have unique features that separate them from the 30s and 40s examples. The Tortoise pattern is unique. The Dark Maroon Red Blind Cap and Piston housing (Tail End) and the Cap top above the clip are both made of Celluloid. 30’s and 40s were made of RHR (Red Hard Rubber). These 1950s examples are the model the re issue 101N Tortoise are based upon. The Front Section (part you hold when writing) on these 1950s example is also unique. It is the same as the early 400. Same internal design and same Nib and Feed assembly as an early 400. Ultra Rare to find this way on a 101N. The pen has no cracks, splits or repairs etc. The Tortoise has unique Patina and discolouration etc that is found on these 50s examples. The pen itself is structurally perfect with zero damage. The inner Green Barrel is MINT. All the patina within the Tortoise is superficial. The Clip and Ring bands are Yellow Gold plated and superb with zero plate loss. Beautiful Tortoise Pattern made of Celluloid. These early examples really do have the best colour and tone of all the Pelikan Tortoise pens. As elegant and handsome as this pen is to look at it writes even better. Superb flex nib full of personality. Writes with a Bold and confident Medium line that has Fine line side stroke at normal pressure. Perfect for everyday use. However this wonderful nib also has sublime flexibility that allows for even more line width variation on the down stroke when varying levels of pressure is applied. Can flex from Fine to all the way past triple Broad. Pelikan simply do not make nibs like this. Not since the 1930-40s. These Pelikan 101N are COMPACT in size but to think of them as small is to not understand their design. When caped ready for storage or placement in your pocket the pen is quite compact at 12cm. However this size is a deception as once you unscrew off the cap the pen itself is a good length similar to 1950s Montblanc 146 or 1930-40s 136 and 134 pens etc.. Also same length once posted cap on tail, indeed the 101N is longer than a 134. (see photo 7 & 10). The Secret to the Compact size is in the Cap.
